Getting your home security system ready for winter

THE change of the season is a perfect chance to take a look at your home security system so that you can welcome winter with peace of mind. “Winter brings with it a change in the weather, which poses a whole new set of challenges for any security system. Is the system ready to deal with wet weather or any potential power cuts, for example? When last did you replace the system’s battery pack, and is it charging properly? “Ensuring that the home security system works properly is an important part of home maintenance,” says Ivan Govender, district manager (KwaZulu-Natal) for Fidelity ADT. He says that the alarm system and other hardware, such as panic buttons and infra-red detectors, must be tested regularly. “This test is of the utmost importance. If the system is not functioning properly it may mean the alarm activation signal may not reach the security company, which will not know that there is an emergency and that assistance is needed. It can be done together with the security service provider. “If anything out of the ordinary is noted, a technician can be dispatched to address the problem.” Over time, home security needs can change. Govender says that now is also a good time for residents to re-assess their overall security needs. “This can be done during a walk around the property. Questions to ask include: Is there a need for additional, or motion-sensing lights? How easily can intruders access the property and should outdoor beams be considered? “Again, a security service provider can offer advice if there is any uncertainty over how to identify security needs.” He adds that it is also critical that the security service provider has the most up-to-date key-holder contact details. “Residents must ensure that their security provider has the current contact details of their primary and secondary key holders. In this way, they can be contacted immediately in the event of an incident or alarm activation. “It is important that we all remain proactive in the fight against crime. “The police and security companies cannot be everywhere all the time. The public are our eyes and ears and we depend on them to speak up and share any crime-related information,” says Govender. “Residents need to stand together and support their local neighbourhood watch and other community safety projects.” — Supplied.

Study: Majority of U.S. Broadband Households Concerned About Security of IoT Devices

As Internet-connected devices become more ubiquitous, security and privacy concerns of end users are also on the rise. Simply installing security systems in smart homes is no longer enough. Security integrators must also consider bolstering cybersecurity measures when installing their systems. A recently released whitepaper from IoT research firm Parks Associates, titled “Residential Security and Encryption: Setting the Standard, Protecting Consumers,” reveals that 64% of U.S. broadband households are concerned about security and privacy when using their connected devices. Parks Associates also found that the majority of homeowners assume security integrators are addressing their cybersecurity concerns. In fact, a Parks Associates survey of U.S. security owners found 63% of professionally monitored subscribers believe the wireless signals from their system are encrypted, even though encryption is currently not the industry-wide standard. While the whitepaper outlines a few ...

The Benefits of a DIY Home Security System

This week’s mailbag addresses the pros and cons of a DIY home security system, how to browse the internet without being tracked, the best way to secure firearms in your home — and more. Let’s get started. I am investigating home security systems since I am not at home constantly. What are some things I should look for in a good home security system? Do you have any recommendations? — Ken R. First, decide whether you want to install a “do-it-yourself” home security system or have a professional company come to your home and install it for you. Before making this decision, check with your local police department and ask if they respond to residential alarms. In most larger cities, they won’t — but the company providing your home security usually has private guards who will respond. If you live in a small town like I do where the police department does respond to intrusion alarms, you might want to go with an alarm company. If you live in a ...
