Pair kick front door of security guard's home and damage cars after pub fight in Wincanton

Two men who became involved in a fight at a Wincanton pub during a works Christmas party sought revenge on a man who helped to eject them, turning up at his front door in the early hours. Liam James Thomas Bushell and Benjamin Michael Vinnell started banging and kicking the door and then ripped the wing mirror off two vehicles parked outside. When they appeared in the dock at Yeovil side by side they said they were horrified by what they had done and wanted to apologise to everyone involved. Bushell, 26, of Westland Road, Yeovil and Vinnell, 24, of Montrose Road, Yeovil, both pleaded guilty that on November 19, 2017, at Wincanton they jointly caused criminal damage of £1,55.95 to a BMW and van belonging to Robert Wiltshire. Prosecutor Susan Butler said the complainant was in the Bear Inn at Wincanton with friends when a fight broke out and he became involved in trying to split things up and then stayed to make sure they had left. At 2.50am Mr Wiltshire was at home when he heard a knock at the door and he could see both defendants outside along with another person. “He didn’t answer the door but then heard it being kicked, and when he looked out of the window he saw the males ripping the wing mirrors off his BMW car and his van by kicking and punching them,” she said. “The police were called and found the defendants in Wincanton town centre at 3am where Bushell was arrested and Vinnell handed himself in voluntarily.” During interview Bushell said he knew the person who lived at the address had been involved in the altercation and said he had only gone there to try to smooth things over. Vinnell said they had been out at a works Christmas party and finished at the Bear Inn when something kicked off with his friends and they got thrown out. They ended up at a block of houses and he admitted hitting and punching the car. Banned for driving at 133mph on the A303: details of 49 drivers convicted for motoring offences on the M5, A38 and other routes in Somerset A statement made by Mr Wiltshire was read to the court where he said he had to take time off work to sort out the damage to his vehicles and he did not sleep well for several days afterwards. “Since the incident I have been more security conscious and am worried there could be another attack and worry for my wife,” he said. “The incident started at the local pub and all I did was to help break up a fight which ended up amicably, but then this happened. “It was totally out of proportion as I had only been trying to help.” Ray Peters, defending Bushell, said his client had drunk four or five pints of cider at the Dolphin pub and then had another three at The Bear. “An argument erupted between his group and the group of the complainant and his wife as a result of inappropriate touching of the wife of a member of the defendant’s group,” he explained. “Things became heated and Bushell was ejected from the pub and he then decided to go and apologise to the complainant about what had happened. “He knocked on the door but there was no answer and matters got out of hand and serious damage was caused to the complainant’s vehicles.” Vinnelll, defending himself, said he was deeply sorry about what had happened and said it was a moment of madness. “It was ridiculous and it’s not in my character to do that and it was definitely down to drinking,” he said. The magistrates imposed a 12 month conditional discharge on Vinnell and an 18 month conditional discharge on Bushell and both defendants were ordered to pay compensation of £750 to Mr Wiltshire along with costs and a victim surcharge.
