BBB warns consumers about home security scheme

The sign in front of your residence touting your home security system might help ward off would-be criminals, but it also could serve as a magnet for unscrupulous salespeople. A door-to-door salesperson, noticing this sign, might stop by to warn you your alarm system needs updates or it's defective and needs to be replaced. Or the salesperson might tell you that your current alarm company has been sold and you need to have a new one installed. That salesperson may switch you to a different alarm company, often without your knowledge — leaving you with two contracts to pay and with difficulty breaking either one without paying extra fees. Better Business Bureau received more than 5,200 complaints about alarm companies nationwide in 2017, making it BBB's 25th most-complained about business. BBB warns consumers to use caution when approached by door-to-door salespeople urging them to switch alarm companies. If a salesperson shows up and claims there is something wrong with your s...

Watch out thieves: technology touted as solution to NZ's stubborn burglary rate

NZ hasn't experienced the big drop-off in burglaries seen in the US and UK. The next year could see a step change in the take up of new home security technology that has the potential to slash burglary rates, an Amazon-owned security company says. But insurers in New Zealand and Australia were still "sitting on the fence" when it came to offering incentives for their customers to equip themselves with the latest security gadgets, Ring's Australia and New Zealand managing director Mark Fletcher said. In the United States, where burglary rates have been dropping fast, insurers had been quicker to get in behind new technology, he said. Ring, which was bought by Amazon in February for more than US$1 billion (NZ$1.46b), sells intelligent doorbells, cameras and spotlights that provide perimeter security for people's homes, and lets them "video chat" from their smartphone to anyone who comes knocking. Republican chaos on immigration shows issue's risks for GOP

Rep. Dave Brat, R-Va., a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, smiles before the vote on the House farm bill which failed to pass, at the Capitol in Washington, Friday, May 18, 2018. The Freedom Caucus opposed the measure, seeking leverage to obtain a vote on a hard-line immigration plan. Last week’s display of anarchy among House Republicans on immigration underscores how problematic and risky the issue is for a GOP that badly needs unity heading into November elections that will decide control of Congress. WASHINGTON (AP) — The chaos among House Republicans this past week on immigration shows just how problematic and risky the issue is for a party that badly needs unity heading into the elections in November that will decide control of Congress. GOP leaders thought they had found a way by Friday morning to make the party's warring conservative and moderate wings happy on an issue that has bedeviled them for years. Conservatives would get a vote by late June on ...

Police Officer Killed, Security Official Injured in IED Explosion in Sinai

An Egyptian police captain from a special forces unit was killed by an improvised explosive device planted on the side of the road on Friday, and a top security official was injured at Safa checkpoint, according to security sources. This came during their distribution of Suhour meals on the Ring Road south of Arish in northern Sinai. “The security forces encircled the area and combed it in search of the perpetrators,” sources added. In March 2016, ISIS claimed responsibility of an armed attack on the "Safa checkpoint", killing at least 18 Egyptian security forces and injuring seven others. Egypt's army and police have launched a major security operation in northern and central Sinai since February 9 to cleanse the region from militants and criminal elements. The operation is known as Operation Sinai 2018. In November, President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi gave orders to the army and police to "use all force to root out terrorism." North Sinai has become a terro...

Commentary: The Gaza border violence shows how extremism corrupts

As you know, everybody sees the Middle East through his or her own narrative. Conservatives see it through the “front line in the war on terror” narrative and defend Israel’s actions on the Gaza border fence this week. Progressives see it through the “continued colonialist oppression” narrative and condemn those actions. I see the situation through the “extremism corrupts everybody” narrative. My narrative starts with the idea that the creation of the state of Israel was a historic achievement involving a historic wrong — the displacement of 700,000 Palestinians. For two generations, in what we can call the Yitzhak Rabin era, the leaders of Israel and of Palestinians tried, sometimes dysfunctionally, to address this wrong and find two homelands around the pre-1967 borders. But sometime in the 1990s, a mental shift occurred. Extremism grew on the Israeli side, exemplified by the ultranationalist who murdered Rabin, but it exploded on the P...

AP FACT CHECK: Trump and the Washington blame game

In this May 16, 2018, photo, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt appears before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee on the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies on budget on Capitol Hill in Washington. Pruitt claimed credit for pollution cleanups done mostly by the Obama administration while flubbing facts about his 2017 condo deal and blaming underlings for his ethical woes. WASHINGTON (AP) — Deflect blame for the bad things. Take undue credit for the good things. When President Donald Trump and his environmental chief sat down with different audiences this past week, the blame game was on display. So was some chest-thumping. Trump tried to lay responsibility on Democrats for the separation of children from parents at the border, even though the policy comes from his own administration. He cited outdated numbers to boast about a decline in illegal border crossings. Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt claimed credit for pollution clean...
