An Advanced DIY Home Security System: Stay Safe And Avoid Fees

Abode Home Security Home security systems are a bit like cars: the price is never the price. First there’s the cost of the unit, but then installation turns out to be a big expense, and service fees build up month after month. The “DIY” home security system has always been an attractive solution, but technologically incapable of doing a good enough job for most people’s liking. Now, advanced camera, networking, and AI technology mean that we can finally build a powerful home security system from self-installed components and no ongoing supervision required. Abode is an advanced home security monitoring and home automation system, and even the “starter” kit features a wide array of gadgets to secure your home. The central gateway, or hub, runs the system and connects to an included mini door/window sensor and a motion sensor, all controllable with the included remote KeyFob. The gateway can play an optional chime when a door opens, but the real volume comes from the built-in 93-decibel siren. It can integrate with a wide variety of service like Amazon Echo and IFTTT, and Its built-in battery can even keep it running for 10+ hours in the event of a power outage. Optional upgrades make Abode into a full-fledged protection service, starting with a wireless keypad for easy control of the hub from anywhere, and a streaming camera for home video feeds. As mentioned, this system is automated such that it doesn’t require outside monitoring, but Abode does offer optional professional monitoring in 3- and 7-day plans, and a full-time monthly plan, as well as an affordable cloud backup plan via 3G cellular. It all installs easily and without the need for extra help or fees. Abode’s expandable nature means it can grow with you as you move from an apartment to a house, and bring in short-term professional monitoring when you leave for a two-week vacation. The system can change as needed, bringing the most advanced security features this side of a mandatory monthly fee.

Study: Majority of U.S. Broadband Households Concerned About Security of IoT Devices

As Internet-connected devices become more ubiquitous, security and privacy concerns of end users are also on the rise. Simply installing security systems in smart homes is no longer enough. Security integrators must also consider bolstering cybersecurity measures when installing their systems. A recently released whitepaper from IoT research firm Parks Associates, titled “Residential Security and Encryption: Setting the Standard, Protecting Consumers,” reveals that 64% of U.S. broadband households are concerned about security and privacy when using their connected devices. Parks Associates also found that the majority of homeowners assume security integrators are addressing their cybersecurity concerns. In fact, a Parks Associates survey of U.S. security owners found 63% of professionally monitored subscribers believe the wireless signals from their system are encrypted, even though encryption is currently not the industry-wide standard. While the whitepaper outlines a few ...

The Benefits of a DIY Home Security System

This week’s mailbag addresses the pros and cons of a DIY home security system, how to browse the internet without being tracked, the best way to secure firearms in your home — and more. Let’s get started. I am investigating home security systems since I am not at home constantly. What are some things I should look for in a good home security system? Do you have any recommendations? — Ken R. First, decide whether you want to install a “do-it-yourself” home security system or have a professional company come to your home and install it for you. Before making this decision, check with your local police department and ask if they respond to residential alarms. In most larger cities, they won’t — but the company providing your home security usually has private guards who will respond. If you live in a small town like I do where the police department does respond to intrusion alarms, you might want to go with an alarm company. If you live in a ...
